You may or may not be aware that when you get to age 70 you will need to apply to renew your UK driving license and every 3 years thereafter. One of the requirements is that you meet the minimum eyesight requirements. However, you are only permitted to drive vehicles up to 3,500kg. There will be some motorhomes that are under this weight but there will be some leisure vehicles that exceed this weight.

If your motorhome is over 3,500kg and when you get to age 70 you would still like to drive it then you will need to apply for CI entitlement to drive such a vehicle weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. It is quite possible that there will be quite a few people who do not realize this is the situation when getting to age 70. So, a few drivers of motorhomes who have owned one for many years could find themselves breaking the law.

It is also interesting to note that if you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997 your driving license will automatically have included Category C1 entitlement. If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997 you would need to take and pass a further driving test to include the C category to enable you to be able to drive a motorhome between 3,500kg and 7,500kg.

If you happen to own or want to rent a very larger American RV-style motorhome weighing over 7,500kg you will need to have an HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) license.

There will be quite a few people who drive motorhomes who are coming up to 70 years of age so if you know someone who is then why not let them know about the above as they may not be aware of the situation.
