It is that time of year when motorhome owners tend to get away for a few days over the Easter holiday period. For some, it is there first trip out in their leisure vehicle in 2024.

Having said that quite a lot of people prefer not to venture too far afield over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend as it can get very busy on the roads. One of the busiest times on our road system is on the morning of Good Friday. In particular the M5 motorway can become gridlocked as well as the dual carriageways taking holidaymakers into the likes of Devon and Cornwall. The M6 is also well known for long queues in particular with holidaymakers making for the Lake District. For those heading for Yorkshire, the M1 and A1 are particularly busy.

There are an increasing number of motorhome owners who prefer to avoid motorways and dual carriageways because they can become gridlocked. Instead they would rather travel at 40 to 50 miles an hour on A roads of which there are many. Quite a lot of motorhome owners will also use one or more B roads.

Nowadays, with modern technology such as Sat Navs, it is often possible to plan a route avoiding the likes of motorways. Yes, it may take longer than if you were to travel on a motorway – that is assuming you don’t get caught up in a 5 mile queue of traffic due to a road accident but at least you will hopefully be able to keep on the move. If you do encounter a build up of holiday traffic on an A road you may be able to take a detour to get out of a jam.

Travelling on A and B roads can often mean that you drive through a number of delightful villages where you can call into a local inn for a meal, drink and a loo break. You can also come across some wonderful countryside.

So, why not venture off the busy major road networks and instead travel at a more leisurely pace on some of the quieter roads in your motorhome.
