Most owners of a motorhome also possess a car that he or she uses on a daily basis whether it is to commute to work or do the weekly shopping. A significant number of car owners also arrange breakdown cover so that if they have a mechanical problem with their vehicle the breakdown company such as the AA or RAC will come out to try to repair the vehicle at the roadside. Dependent upon the level of cover, if it is not possible to repair the car at the roadside, the vehicle could be towed to say a local garage.

Car breakdown cover is not suitable for covering a motorhome in the event of your leisure vehicle requiring mechanical assistance – you will need specialist motorhome breakdown cover. Don’t be concerned, for a large number of motorhomes this is something that can easily be arranged with a number of specialist providers.

As a minimum, you should consider arranging roadside assistance for cover in the UK so that if you breakdown anywhere in the UK assistance will be provided. As an optional extra, you really should consider including local recovery meaning that if the mechanic is unable to get your motorhome up and running at the roadside the vehicle can be transported to say a local garage for repair.

Other options that you might like to consider include home assistance. This level of cover means that should you try to start your motorhome without success at your home then assistance is available by the recovery company who will send someone to your home to try to get the leisure vehicle moving again.

A further option is national recovery whereby should your vehicle breakdown when you are say 300 miles from home on the UK mainland, the motorhome and a set number of occupants will be transported to any destination on the mainland in the UK.

Another potential option is onward travel. With this, should you break down in your motorhome and the vehicle not be repairable promptly, then you and your passengers could possibly be provided with another motorhome to carry on with your holiday.

If you enjoy travelling to Europe in your motorhome then you may wish to consider including European cover that provides as similar level of cover to what is available in the UK.

Do check the policy conditions for any exclusions so that you know wheat is and what is not covered.
