More and more people are considering selling there home and taking to the road in a motorhome making it their permanent residence. So, what are some of the pros and cons of doing this?
Pros
Mobility – you can travel as far as your budget allows you whether that is within the UK or even further to one or more European Union countries or potentially even further than that. There is that well-known phrase ‘the world is your oyster’ that rings true in this respect. Imagine waking up on a summer’s morning overlooking a sandy beach somewhere in the UK. You could spend a couple of weeks in one location before moving onto another.
Cost – the amount you spend on buying a motorhome is likely to be less than buying a conventional home. The cost of maintaining a motorhome is likely to be less than that of a house, bungalow or flat. After all you are living in a smaller space that should be cheaper to heat in the winter. You will not have to worry about having to replace the garden fencing periodically.
Cleaning – it shouldn’t take you as long to clean a motorhome as it would a house thus giving you more ‘me time’.
Meet like-minded people – there is a fair chance that whilst on your travels you will meet other people who have decided to give up the rat race and take up permanent residence in a motorhome.
Cons
Living Space – let’s be honest you are going to have a lot less space inside your motorhome in comparison to your 3 bed semi. If you are fortunate enough to have been able to purchase a large enough motorhome then you may have a shower room on board as well as a toilet but there will be a lot of people who are dependent upon using a shower or bath at say a campsite.
Overnight Parking – you will need to plan ahead as to where you will be spending the night. Don’t assume that you can just pull into a layby and park there.
Ease of driving – many motorhomes are quite sizeable and some not really suitable to be driven along single-track roads with passing places. So, you will need to take this into account when deciding which make and model of motorhome to purchase.
There are no doubt a number of other pros and cons of living permanently in a motorhome but we hope that we have given you food for thought and this helps you in making a decision as to whether the ‘van life” is for you.
