On the 3rd November 2022 the Department of Transport published a report entitled “Road conditions in England to March 2022” that makes for interesting reading. A copy of this document can be found on the gov.uk website.
All vehicle owners would prefer to drive on roads that don’t have any potholes and cracks and are as smooth as possible to drive on as it makes for a more comfy journey and would reduce damage to vehicles and improve safety. Motorhome owners often make lengthy trips in their leisure vehicles so they are as keen as anyone else to have a good road surface to drive on.
The report revealed that the following may need repair work to them sooner rather than later: –
4% of motorways
7% of major A trunk roads
4% of local A roads
6% of B and C roads
15% of unassigned roads
As you can see, potentially, that comes to 36%. We are sure you will agree that is a considerably high percentage.
The Strategic Road Network that is made up of motorways and major A trunk roads makes up for 2% of the road system in England but around 33% of traffic use such roads. B and C roads make up for 28% of the road system in England.
Motorhome drivers probably end up driving on all types of roads here in the UK at some time or other. Typically, like a lot of people, they probably use motorways and major A roads for as much of their journey as possible as they look to get from home to their destination. Then they will possibly end up completing the journey on A and B roads and unclassified roads. Having arrived at their destination, they may then spend their holiday touring around the locality using the smaller roads.
It is going to be interesting to see when the roads in need of repair now actually end up being repaired. Let’s not forget that there will be many roads that are reaching a point in the near future when they will need repairing so will we ever see the figures reduce?
