There are many sources that you can purchase a used motorhome from i.e. direct from a dealer, online, a private sale or at an auction just like with a car. So, how to you go about purchasing a motorhome at auction?

Motorhomes are sold at auctions for a number of reasons such as by a dealer to offload unwanted stock quickly to make way for newer motorhomes on their forecourts, to sell to other dealers, to sell repossessed motorhomes on behalf of finance companies whose owners have been unable to keep up their repayments and private individuals selling their leisure vehicles in the hope of getting a good price.

Well, the first thing worth considering is to visit a number of auctions at which second hand motorhomes are being sold. This will give you a better understanding as to how such an auction works but do not be tempted on these fact finding missions to get some of your hard earned cash out of your pocket to buy what you consider to be a bargain- save that for another occasion.

When attending an auction of motorhomes make sure that you arrive early to give you the opportunity to spend some time looking over the vehicles you are interested in buying. You may wish to bring someone with you who is mechanically minded if you are not as do bear in mind that a motorhome bought at auction is “sold as seen”.

Before committing to buy a motorhome make sure that it has a satisfactory HPI check or that you do one yourself.

Start the engine to make sure everything looks and sounds OK. Look underneath the leisure vehicle to make sure everything seems in order. Are the tyres in good condition? Are the brakes OK?

Look all over the outside of the motorhome for any damage such as dents and scratches – if there are how much would it cost for you to have them repaired – is it cost effective?

Go inside the motorhome both in the cab area and the living areas and check as much as you can i.e. the state of the upholstery, bedding, cupboards, en-suite and kitchen appliances.

Check for any damp.

What is the rate of commission and, if there is one, how much is the buyer’s premium?

Is the total price you will have to pay within your budget also taking into account any estimated repair costs?

Remember – if you are not 100% sure about a particular motorhome don’t buy it.

If you are successful in purchasing a motorhome at auction then we hope that it provides you with many years good service.
