If you are thinking of purchasing a second hand motorhome then you will need to take into account a number of things with one of those being the amount of money you have to spend. A benefit of buying a used leisure vehicle rather than a new one is that the price will be lower.
You will need to make sure that the motorhome is of a suitable size and layout to meet your requirements i.e. if you are looking for a vehicle just for you and your partner then you may wish to consider buying a smaller motorhome than if you have a large family to accommodate whilst on holiday.
As with used cars, if you buy a motorhome from a dealer then it will probably come with some sort of warranty whereas if you buy one privately it will not unless it is young enough to still have some of the manufacturer’s warranty remaining.
There should be a good selection of used motorhomes to view either at a dealer or at one of the larger motorhome shows that take place each year.
Don’t be frightened to negotiate the asking price. Remember, if you don’t ask you don’t get.
Make sure that you take the vehicle for a test drive both out on the open road and also about town and over bumps to see how it feels.
Check the motorhome for any scratches and dents. If there are any then you could either decide not to buy the vehicle, ask for the bodywork to be repaired at the current owners expense or negotiate a reduction in the price. Make sure that everything inside the motorhome looks to be as it should be i.e. cared for.
Make sure that it does not smell musty inside the vehicle as this could be an indication of dampness. Have a damp test undertaken.
Bring someone with you who knows about mechanics to look over the likes of the engine and the other working parts.
Do an HPI check to make sure that there is nothing untoward i.e. that the vehicle has not been written off by an insurance company.
Make sure that the electric and gas works and all white goods.
Check the sanitary ware i.e. toilet, shower and sink.
Lie on the beds to make sure that the mattresses are comfortable and set up any beds that involve using the seats.
The above list is not exhaustive but we hope that you find it of assistance when considering buying a used motorhome.
