There are probably a number of owners of motorhomes or campervans that are under the impression that they can pull over for the night in their motorhome anywhere they like as long as there is a space to do so. This is not the case so read on…

Ideally, owners of leisure vehicles should park at a camping or caravan site that accepts motorhomes and campervans but there is of course a fee payable for a pitch to put your vehicle on.

If you are considering parking in a designated parking area you should make sure that there are no signs saying you are not allowed to park overnight as many designated parking areas do not permit overnight parking.

Imagine if you are say touring in one of the National Parks. You should not assume that you can just pull off the single-track road with passing places onto a grassy area and that it is OK to leave your motorhome overnight. There are not many locations where you can stay overnight in your motorhome in the National Parks so do your research before setting off on your holiday or short break.

If you are touring in the middle of nowhere, far off the beaten track i.e. wild camping don’t just pull over to park overnight in the gateway of a farmer’s field. You must ask his or her permission.

Avoid parking in public car parks as many of them do not permit overnight parking in them.

You could consider parking in a truck stop overnight although you may be woken up at the breaking of dawn by an HGV driver making an early start.

Do remember that wherever you are able to park your motorhome or campervan overnight that when you leave that no rubbish is left behind.
