Buying a motorhome or campervan usually involves a significant capital outlay whether it is a new or used leisure vehicle that you are purchasing. Unfortunately, you only have to do a quick search on the Internet to read news articles involving people who have had such a vehicle stolen.
Hopefully, those people who have had a motorhome stolen will have had it insured as this is a legal requirement unless the vehicle is kept off the public road system and declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). At least if the vehicle is insured the owner will be able to make a claim on their motorhome insurance policy and receive some form of payment that can be used to buy another motorhome or campervan.
However, it would be preferable if the motorhome had not been stolen in the first place. So, what can you do to reduce the possibility of being a target for a motor vehicle thief?
You could keep your motorhome in a secure place when not in use. Instead of leaving it on the street outside your home you could put it on your drive as this may reduce the possibility of it being stolen. Better still, if you have a large enough garage, put it in the garage out of sight of a potential thief. Another option is to have it stored at a secure location such as in a locked and guarded compound.
If you do park your motorhome on the drive why not consider having a security post fitted to block your vehicle in.
You could fit a wheel clamp to one of the wheels.
You could fit a steering wheel lock to it as this would act as a visual deterrent to someone looking to break into a motorhome or campervan to steal it. It often only takes a few seconds for an experienced thief to break into a vehicle, start it up and drive away. However, if there is a steering lock that needs removing that would add to the time needed to steal the vehicle and may put off some thieves.
You could have a more sophisticated security device fitted such as an alarm, engine immobiliser or tracking device. If you can afford to do so, you could have all three devices fitted.
An added benefit of making your motorhome more secure is that you may be able to get cheaper motorhome insurance.
