If your motorhome is not being used at the moment and is not on a public road then, as long as you declare it SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification), you are not legally required to insure it. However, you run the risk that if it is stolen or damaged then it will not be covered so you need to think very carefully about whether you want to cancel your cover.

Assuming that you decide to continue to insure your motorhome, what is likely to happen to the cost of insuring your leisure vehicle?

Well, according to the price comparison website MoneySupermarket.com, the average cost of fully comprehensive cover for a car in the last three months of 2020 rose slightly when compared with the previous three months. Premiums in the last quarter of 2020 averaged £490 per annum whereas in the third quarter the figure was £473 per annum – an average rise of £17 per annum.

Of course, just because car insurance premiums increased when comparing these periods does not mean to say that the same thing happened with the cost of insuring a motorhome.

Looking forward, unfortunately nobody has a crystal ball capable of revealing what is going to happen to the cost of motor insurance in the next few months. We are in another lockdown at the moment due to the pandemic meaning that there are no doubt fewer vehicles on our roads so does this mean that insurance companies will lower how much they charge to insure motor vehicles including motorhomes and campervans? After all, it is quite possible that the majority of motorhomes are remaining on peoples’ drives at the moment as they will not be being used for holidays. With fewer vehicles on our roads this should mean a fall in road traffic accidents resulting in insurers having to pay out less in claims.

It will also be interesting to see if any insurers decide to offer any form of refund to owners of motorhomes this year if such vehicles are not being used.
