Buying a motorhome often involves a huge financial investment especially if it is a brand new vehicle that is being purchased at a cost of many tens of thousands of pounds. Whilst you will have insured such a vehicle against the likes of theft, it is most unpleasant when a motorhome or campervan is stolen often causing huge distress to the owner and family members. Unfortunately, thieves are not going to be concerned about the impact their actions have on owners of motorhomes – a thief is interested in making some form of financial gain.

Readers will find it of concern to hear that in North Wales there have been in excess of 30 motorhomes stolen over a 16 month period. This seems to be a huge number of vehicles.

Interestingly, but perhaps not of a surprise, all the motorhomes stolen were done so during the night. In some cases, thieves are using sophisticated equipment to help steal vehicles. This is concerning and it is to be hoped that the manufacturers of motorhomes can look at the security systems they have in place and consider making improvements. Police in North Wales are recommending that the owners of motorhomes use security features that are very visible such as steering wheel locks and wheel clamps.

Of course, there are no doubt many other motorhome thefts occurring in various parts of the UK so it is important that all motorhome and campervan owners try to reduce the possibility of their vehicles being stolen. So many motorhomes are left on owners’ drives or parked in the street outside the home where they are at greater risk of being stolen. It would be wonderful if people were able to leave their motorhomes in a locked building away from the eyes of potential thieves but this is not always possible or perhaps in a locked compound that is monitored by cameras and security patrols.
