Some of you will no doubt have ventured over to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in your campervan or motorhome. It is a delightful island off the Northumberland coast that can be reached by crossing a causeway but only at certain times of the day.

This is because when the tide comes in the causeway is covered by deep water. You would not want to get caught out making this crossing in your motorhome. If you do then you could find that your vehicle is partially submerged and you would need to get to one of the shelters that are on stilts above sea level.

Unfortunately, this recently happened to a couple who ended up with their horsebox type campervan being caught on the causeway in deep seawater. Presumably, the couple would have been rather scared by the experience. Fortunately, they were able to make it to one of the shelters on stilts from which they were subsequently rescued by the Seahouses lifeboat.

It will be interesting to find out if the vehicle that had been partially submerged in seawater was repairable. When you look at the photographs of the partially submerged vehicle there must be some concern about its well being as the engine compartment appears to be under water.

Over the years, there have been a number of incidents of people getting stranded in their vehicles whilst trying to get to/or from Holy Island and the mainland. The safe times to cross are publicized so if you are considering making the trip then do make sure that you plan your journey. The inconvenience and potential cost of such a thing happening would be a cause for concern.
