There are no doubt some people who start out by buying a tent to enjoy holidaying outdoors with their family before then deciding to invest in a motorhome a few years later. So, what are some of the benefits and negative points of purchasing a motorhome and giving up sleeping under canvas?
Cost – yes, this is an obvious one but it is an important factor. There is no doubt that the cost of buying a motorhome is considerably greater than purchasing a tent. You can buy a new tent and related camping equipment for a few hundred pounds but the cost of a new motorhome is going to set you back several tens of thousands of pounds.
Fuel costs are probably going to be greater for a motorhome as you are likely to get less miles to the gallon than you would driving about in your car.
Setting Up – when you arrive at the campsite it is so much quicker to set up your motorhome. All, you really need to do is connect to the electrical hookup and you are sorted. With a tent you could spent a couple of hours or so unpacking the tent and erecting it, laying down the groundsheet, blowing up the airbeds and putting out the sleeping bags etc.
Location – there are more campsites that accept tents than allow motorhomes.
With a motorhome it is usually quite easy to find a layby to park up for the night if you are not able to get to a campsite that is not something that is possible to do in a tent.
Living Accommodation – it depends upon the size of the motorhome and tent but in terms of living space there is possibly more available space to move around in a family tent than in a motorhome.
However, a motorhome is more suitable in inclement weather. If it is pouring down with rain you are going to be more comfortable and warmer in a motor home than in a tent.
You may also have a toilet in the motorhome and have better kitchen equipment readily to hand. You will also have a pleasant sitting area and table to eat and relax. You may also have a TV in your RV.
Getting around the area – if you like to get off the beaten track then it may be easier to drive around those single-track roads with passing places in a car as opposed to a large motor home.
So, as you can see, there are pros and cons of both motorhomes and tents. Ultimately, you must make the decision as to which type of holiday appeals to you most but whichever one you choose we hope that you enjoy the experience for many years to come.
