The vast majority of people use a motorhome for short breaks and holidays whether that is just in the UK or some will also board a ferry or use Eurotunnel to cross the English Channel and travel around Europe. A limited number of people will, for a variety of reasons, take up permanent residence in their motorhome but how practical is it to do this?
Well, it is achievable but you may need to consider a number of things to ensure that such an existence is manageable. Of course, if you live on your own then you have nobody else to consider but if you have a partner then you will certainly need to get on with each other as you do have to live in a confined space.
Are you going to remain in the same place or are you going to be able to move around to different locations? Hopefully, if you are going to stay on a caravan park you can negotiate a reduced pitch fee.
Ideally, you will need to make sure that the motorhome is of sufficient size so that it contains all that you require. The bigger the better.
The heating system will need to be adequate to cope with the rigors of the freezing temperatures we encounter on occasions in the winter period. The windows should be double-glazed and ideally have the floors insulated.
You will need to have one or more water tanks on board of sufficient capacity that re-filling them only needs doing every few days.
You will probably need a couple of leisure batteries to ensure that you have enough power for the lighting and to use small appliances such as the TV as well as being able to charge your mobile phone.
Hopefully, your motor home will be big enough to accommodate a toilet and shower thus avoiding having to step outside in the middle of the night.
In the kitchen area you will need a gas hob, fridge, sink and a microwave.
You will obviously need a table and somewhere to sit and of course somewhere to sleep.
Don’t forget to make sure that you have adequate motorhome insurance in place.
It is a huge decision to move out of a bricks and mortar property and live permanently in a motorhome and there are no doubt some people who have tried it and decided it is not for them. If it is something that you have decided to do then we hope that it works out for you.
