An awful lot of people here in the UK enjoy the freedom that a holiday in a motorhome provides but there are quite a few things that you probably ought to consider before deciding if it is for you. There is no point in investing a considerable sum of money in such a vehicle only to decide 6 months down the line that you regret using your savings or taking on another loan.

After all, apart from buying a property, the most expensive purchase you may possibly make is to invest in a motorhome. In that respect, it is not difficult to spend upwards of £40,000 so why go to all that expense before trying the vehicle out?

If you have never taken a short break or a couple of week’s holiday in a motorhome then how do you know you will like it? Yes, your neighbour who has had such a recreational vehicle for years may be singing its virtues but that does not mean to say that you will get as much pleasure from this form of holidaying.

For instance, how do you feel about driving a vehicle that will be longer, wider and higher than your car down many narrow single-track country roads with passing places that are not designed for a motorhome? You may have chosen to buy a motor home that does not have a shower so are you happy to stay on a campsite where you may have to use the toilet and shower facilities utilised by many other motorhome and tent owners? Yes, many new motorhomes come with lots of mod cons and can be well laid out but are you happy to prepare your breakfast and perhaps some other meals within the confines of your new motorhome?

Are you a family or couple who take their holidays in the warmer months here in the UK and tend to have spring and winter breaks abroad in say sunny Southern Spain? If you are and want to do so in your new motorhome are you comfortable at driving overseas for what would potentially be considerably long distances?

So, why not hire a motorhome for a week or so and see if the type of holiday it provides is one that you feel you will enjoy for many years to come. If it isn’t then it is a few hundred pounds or so in rental costs that you may feel you have lost but better to do that than pay out tens of thousands of pounds and then lose a significant percentage of that sum due to depreciation when you sell the motorhome.

If that type of holiday were for you then that would be the time to make that commitment to buy such a vehicle. If you shop around, you may find that there are one or two companies that will allow you to hire a motorhome for a week and, if you decide within a reasonable period of time to buy one from the same company, they will knock the week’s rental cost off the purchase price of the vehicle.
